Are You

Having trouble latching your baby and feeling like you're ready to quit?
Sick of people telling you breast milk can't satisfy your baby?
Tired of folks telling you to "just give your baby formula"?
Concerned because your nipples are sore and painful?
Wondering if your baby nursing all the time is normal?
Uncomfortable breastfeeding outside of your home?

If so, let’s get you supported with evidenced-based information while still taking a holistic approach.

Just because the other women in your family didn't breastfeed/chestfeed, doesn’t automatically mean you can’t.

Our women were disempowered, but that ends now. It is our responsibility to break this generational curse together.

Our mothers, grandmothers and aunties were:

Stripped of their desires The first one in your family to breastfeed/chestfeed/bodyfeed
Led to believe that breastfeeding was nasty
Told that breastfeeding reminded people of slavery

Our women didn't even know breastfeeding was a choice!

In their lives, formula was touted as superior to human milk and was heavily marketed to Black women.

Due to commercialization and racist practices, bad information was given to them that sabotaged their milk supplies. Hospitals even gave them pills to dry up their milk.

This is STILL HAPPENING TODAY.

Current research shows that “Black mothers are 9 times as likely to be given formula for their babies than white mothers”

Together we can disrupt this generational cycle of trauma, reclaim ourselves and empower our children.

Black

breastfeeding

is revolutionary!

Your Postpartum Consultation will give you the tools and space you need to discuss your baby as well as your feeding goals, concerns and challenges that you’re having related to nursing your baby.

We'll also cover pumping/bottle feeding and/or supplementation whether that’s with formula, your own milk or donor milk.

Through it all, you will learn what it takes to establish and maintain your milk supply and how to troubleshoot common issues such as nipple pain, engorgement and plugged ducts. This service is perfect for those with doubts and need a little encouragement to continue their breastfeeding/chestfeeding journey.

Let’s break these generational patterns together and unapologetically take back our bodies.

Mama,
You are not alone. You may not be feeling like yourself mentally or emotionally and that's okay. It is completely normal to be sad and to grieve a difficult pregnancy or a traumatic labor.

You're never alone in not feeling that immediate bond with your baby or like you have your ‘ish together. Whether you are happy, disappointed, excited, angry, bewildered or anything else, you deserve the space to feel how you feel.

#WeSeeHer #WeHearHer

Although lactating can improve mental health, there is still a lot of stigmatization in the Black community. We’ve heard it all:

“You just need to pray”
“Therapy is for white people”
Someone is doing witchcraft/obeah/voodoo on you
“What are you depressed about when you have (fill in the blank)”

You Deserve The Postpartum Care That Reflects Your Current Needs

You may be the 1st in your family to try breastfeeding (Congratulations!).

Navigating uncharted waters while battling postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety and dealing with the stress of a newborn isn’t easy.

Taking care of yourself and finding the appropriate types of support is imperative during this period, and scrambling around looking for a postpartum doula, lactation consultant, massage therapist or mental health therapist that understands you, can be difficult while in the fog of new motherhood.

Hence the creation of The Bridge Directory. It is a community of professionals seeking to heal the healthcare disparities that plague our people. At your fingertips, you will have access to a list of professionals who have walked in your shoes and are committed to serving you.

Just like our ancestors, we too are resilient. Today’s resiliency may look like:

Positive self-talk
Knowing your body and what your baby needs
Speaking up
Seeking help

Breastfeeding / Chestfeeding / Bodyfeeding Is The Biological Norm

Together, we can end the deep rooted breastfeeding myths that have plagued Black families and communities for far too long. Here’s what we’re sure of:

Breastfeeding will NOT spoil your baby (and neither will holding them too much).
Your baby does NOT need to “learn to cry it out”.
It is OK for your baby to “rely on you”. Enjoy that time together!
Breastmilk alone CAN satisfy your baby and keep your baby full
Your milk IS real milk
Your baby doesn’t NEED formula milk just to “fatten up”.
Breasts are NOT just for sex and for your significant other.
Breastfeeding is NOT what causes “sagging boobs”.
You CAN breastfeed AND stay sexy

You are taking back your power
You are disrupting intergenerational trauma and ending patterns of abuse
You are seeking help
You are breastfeeding

Family womans

And for all of these, you should be proud of your bravery, your efforts, and your achievements!
